Scout’s Road Notes

Before the Next Mile: Scout’s RV Walkaround

A departure routine makes it easier to notice something out of place before you pull away. Use these reminders as a starting point, then follow the instructions and checklist for your specific RV and tow vehicle. Every setup is a little different.

Give tires and lights a careful look

Before a long trip, look over tire tread and sidewalls for damage or unusual wear. Check tire pressure when the tires are cold, using the pressure guidance for your RV and tow vehicle from their manufacturers, and remember the spare if you carry one. A number molded on a tire is not automatically the right pressure for your loaded vehicle. If you see damage, ask a tire professional.

Check headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and trailer lights if you tow. A second person can make the light check much easier. If a light or warning system is not working as expected, sort it out before the drive.

Stow the outside for travel

Disconnect and put away campsite hookups and gear. Close and secure exterior storage doors. Follow your RV’s instructions for retracting steps, awnings, slide-outs, stabilizers, and leveling equipment. If you tow, check the hitch connection, electrical connection, and safety equipment using the instructions for your setup.

Make the inside travel ready

Latch cabinets and the refrigerator, secure loose items, and take a last look around the living area. A small item left on a counter can become a distraction once you move. Follow your owner’s manual for any appliance, fuel, or system checks that apply to your RV.

Take one last lap

Walk around the RV once more after you think you are finished. Look up and down, check the area around the tires, and make sure nothing is still attached or left at the campsite. A short checklist you use every time is more reliable than trying to remember the whole routine on a busy travel morning.

If you notice a tire concern, an unfamiliar sound, or a system that is not behaving normally, ask for help before the trip. A question handled at the shop is easier than a surprise down the road.

Scout’s note: When the checklist says you are done, take one more lap around the RV.
